HVAC Sensors HVAC sensors are crucial when designing a new HVAC system or improving an older system. The importance of accurate monitoring cannot be underestimated. Because of this, sensor accuracy and consistency of readings play a significant role in the success of the system.

The system’s ability to sense and accurately measure parameters such as temperature and humidity of the air, both inside and outside, and control dampers, thermostats, fans and cooling and heating systems is directly proportional to the efficiency of the system.

HVAC sensors operation and efficiency

An HVAC system, apart from the heating and cooling plant, includes sensors throughout the system. Sensors are in the mixed and supply air ducts and the outside and return air ducts. These HVAC sensors provide the raw data from which the controller manages the system’s performance. In older HVAC systems, the sensors may be based on old technologies that were available at installation and merely circulated or brought in fresh air.
Modern systems determine the most efficient use of air by monitoring temperature and humidity. For example, it may be more efficient to bring in hotter, drier air than removing moisture from circulating air. This can lead to significant savings particularly in damp environments such as kitchens and shower rooms.

In HVAC systems without humidity sensors, because the humidity is not monitored, they will not dehumidify the air thereby cooling more inefficiently. While only monitoring and controlling on temperature will work, monitoring both temperature and humidity improves system efficiency.

Accuracy and Consistency

An HVAC system with a central controller relies on accurate data to adjust air flow and cooling and heating to achieve optimum conditions. Therefore, the data that the controller receives needs to be accurate. Inaccurate sensors can prematurely or falsely trigger the control system if the accuracy is off. A system error as small as ±1°C or 5% relative humidity has been shown to be noticeable in additional costs or potential savings, while also affecting equipment longevity.
